EMF Health Effects

9 things you need to know about the electromagnetic fields that surround you

Why has your exposure to artificial electromagnetic fields has significantly increased in recent years? Why is artificial radiation now more aggravating than in the past? Are there any health effects? Why do insurance companies exclude the coverage for the risks associated with electromagnetic fields? Do the legal safety limits protect you? Why do many scientists and organizations warn about the dangers from uncontrolled use of technology, particularly by pregnant women and children?

Electromagnetic radiation levels are increasing

The current unprecedented levels of high frequency wireless radiation are constantly increasing due to the proliferation of existing sources and the continuous addition of new wireless applications. Today we are exposed all to wireless radiation from:

  • mobile phones and cell phone masts
  • wireless Internet (WI-FI)
  • cordless phones and their bases (DECT)
  • tv and radio broadcasting antennas
  • wireless alarm systems, fire detection and temperature control systems
  • radio networks for police, private security companies, transport companies, taxi etc.
  • Baby Monitors
  • cordless keyboards
  • devices that work with Bluetooth continuously activated
  • wireless games consoles
  • WIMAX networks
  • antennas for ministries embassies, the Armed Forces, Security Forces, coast Guard, Civil Aviation Authority, etc.
  • radars military, airports, ports, meteorological services etc.
  • satellites
  • antennas within industrial plants, stadiums, etc interactive school boards
  • wireless speakers
  • microwave ovens
  • the HAARP (= High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program)
  • smart electricity meters

 "Thus in the frequency range 100 kHz to 300 GHz, 50 years ago it was scarcely possible to measure 10 pW/cm2 on the ground in our countries. Today, depending on the location, values one million to one thousand million times higher are recorded because of the explosion of telecommunications." European Parliament Resolution B3-0280/92 [1]

At the same time, our exposure to low frequency radiation due to electricity has increased significantly due to:

  • greater use of electric and electronic devices
  • greater power consumption
  • turn to electrical solutions for cooling and heating (eg instead of oil, natural gas)
  • use of plastic cables in homes instead of grounded steel cables

lowfrequencysources

...whereas electromagnetic fields (EMFs) exist in nature and have consequently always been present on earth; whereas, however, in recent decades, environmental exposure to man-made sources of EMFs has risen constantly, driven by demand for electricity, increasingly more specialized wireless technologies, and changes in the organization of society; whereas the end effect is that every individual is now being exposed to a complex mixture of electric and magnetic fields of different frequencies, both at home and at work,..." European Parliament resolution 2008/2211 [2]

Today artificial radiation is more aggravating waveform than in the past

The previously simple sinusoidal signal of the electric network (50-60Hz) is now distorted by higher harmonic frequencies (KHz = thousands Hz) due to the extensive use of electronic non-linear load devices such as fluorescent lamps, AC adapters, dimmer electronic switches, inverter air conditioners, plasma TVs, photovoltaic systems etc.

This phenomenon is called "Dirty Electricity" because it causes overheating of neutral conductor and premature aging of equipment. Scientists believe that the new waveform of power grid is particularly burdensome for the man.

Also the latest wireless radiation sources (cell phone antennas, mobile and cordless phones, wi-fi wireless modems, etc.) emit electromagnetic waves with digital modulation in contrast to older analogue sources (eg radio and tv antennas).

The most unnatural digital square waveform which contains high intensity pulses is considered by many scientists biologically more powerful than the older analog sinusoidal waveform.

"There is substantial scientific evidence that some modulated fields (pulsed or repeated signals) are bioactive, which increases the likelihood that they could have health impacts with chronic exposure even at very low exposure levels. Modulation signals may interfere with normal, non-linear biological processes. Modulation is a fundamental factor that should be taken into account in new public safety standards; at present it is not even a contributing factor. To properly evaluate the biological and health impacts of exposure to modulated RF (carrier waves), it is also essential to study the impact of the modulating signal (lower frequency fields or ELF-modulated RF). Current standards have ignored modulation as a factor in human health impacts, and thus are inadequate in the protection of the public in terms of chronic exposure to some forms of ELF-modulated RF signals. The current IEEE and ICNIRP standards are not sufficiently protective of public health with respect to chronic exposure to modulated fields (particularly new technologies that are pulse-modulated and heavily used in cellular telephony)." BioInitiative Report [3]

Radiation emissions allowed by the legislation are too high

asfalioriaekthesisaktinovolies

The legal exposure limits to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation today are aligned with the limits set by the International Commission for the Protection against Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which:

  • are "based on short-term direct health effects such as stimulation of peripheral nerves and muscles, electrocution and burns on contact with conductive objects and warming of the tissues caused by the absorption of energy during exposure to electromagnetic fields" (exact transfer in the ICNIRP guide [i])
  • recognize only the thermal effect of radiation and do not take into consideration other non thermal, effects such as the production of stress proteins, increased activity of free radicals, calcium outflow, increased permeability of blood-brain barrier, platelet aggregation, increased production of histamine etc.
  • have changed little in recent years, despite the rapid increase of electromagnetic pollution and the existence of new studies showing that these non-thermal action mechanisms can lead to long term health effects such as leukemia, breast cancer, brain and the acoustic nerve cancer, Alzheimer, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, depression, allergies, etc.
  • do not take into account the continuous and simultaneous exposure of the population to multiple radiation sources
  • ignore the increased absorption of radiation by infants and children
  • do not take into account the waveform of each radiation signal (digital vs analogue) shown to be a potent biological agent

“The limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields which have been set for the general public are obsolete. They do not take account of developments in information and communication technologies or vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, newborn babies and children. “ European Parliament, Resolution 2007/2252 [4]

Many scientific bodies have warned about the long term effects of artificial radiation

750pregnantradiationsmartphone

In recent years, many organizations have issued statements on the effects of artificial electromagnetic fields, with an emphasis vulnerable population groups such as children and pregnant women:

The need for measures to protect public health has been highlighted in dozens of scientific resolutions:

  • Resolution 1998 Vienna, Salzburg Resolution 2000, Declaration of Alcalá 2002, Catania Resolution 2002 , Freiburger Appeal 2002, Bamberger Appeal 2004, Maintaler Appeal 2004, Coburger Appeal 2005, Oberammergauer Appeal 2005, Haibacher Appeal 2005, Pfarrkirchener Appeal 2005, Freienbacher Appeal 2005, Lichtenfelser Appeal 2005, Hofer Appeal 2005, Stockacher Appeal 2005, Helsinki Appeal 2005, Benevento Resolution 2006 , Allgäuer Appeal 2006, WiMax Appeal 2006, Brussels Appeal 2007, London Resolution 2007 , Resolution 2008 Venice , Porto Alegre Resolution 2009

"The Assembly recommends that the member states of the Council of Europe take all reasonable measures to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, especially to radio frequencies from mobile phones, and particularly the exposure to children and young people who seem to be most at risk from head tumours, reconsider the scientific basis for the present standards on exposure to electromagnetic fields set by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which have serious limitations, and apply ALARA principles, covering both thermal effects and the athermic or biological effects of electromagnetic emissions or radiation, put in place information and awareness-raising campaigns on the risks of potentially harmful long-term biological effects on the environment and on human health, especially targeting children, teenagers and young people of reproductive age,pay particular attention to “electrosensitive” people who suffer from a syndrome of intolerance to electromagnetic fields and introduce special measures to protect them, including the reation of wave-free areas not covered by the wireless network (...)" Council of Europe, Resolution 1815/2011 [5]

Increased and lifetime exposure of children to artificial radiation can have irreversible effects on their mental development

750childtabletradiation

According to some scientists, wireless radiation detunes the initial calibration of brain networks in newborns, prevents the formation of normal electromagnetic activity of the brain, which is stabilized at around the age of 12 years and may be related to the large increase in cases of hyperactivity, autism and epilepsy recent years.

Read more about the effects of radiation in children and pregnant women..

"The adverse effects of electrosmog may take decades to be appreciated, although some, like carcinogenicity, are already starting to surface. This gigantic experiment on our children and grandchildren could result in massive damage to mind and body with the potential to produce a disaster of unprecedented proportions, unless proper precautions are immediately implemented." Paul Rosch, professor of medicine at New York Medical School [6]

6

The continuous and long-term exposure to a variety of artificial radiation sources may be associated with the development of a range of health symptoms in a significant portion of the population

750electrohyperesensitivity3

The occurrence of allergic reactions such as nausea, ringing in the ears, numbness in the face, dry eyes, tachycardia, redness and rashes, swollen sinuses, etc. in areas with high electromagnetic fields, is called electrohypersensitivity (EHS).

Researchers Hallberg and Oberfeld studying the growth rates of cases, predicted that by 2017 allergic reactions to artificial radiation will display 50% of the population [7]

Electrohypersensitivity is already recognized as a disability in Sweden and to this direction are also moving other countries, due to fact that those affected find it difficult to work and move in public places because of excessive levels of artificial radiation.

More about the allergy of the 21st century..

"Sensitivity to EMF has been given the general name “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity” or EHS. It comprises nervous system symptoms like headache, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbances, skin symptoms like prickling, burning sensations and rashes, pain and ache in muscles and many other health problems. Whatever its cause, EHS is a real and sometimes a disabling problem for the affected persons. Their EMF exposure is generally several orders of magnitude under the limits of internationally accepted standards." World Health Organization [8]

"The European Parliament calls on Member States to follow the example of Sweden and to recognise persons that suffer from electrohypersensitivity as being disabled so as to grant them adequate protection as well as equal opportunities.” European Parliament resolution on the health problems associated with electromagnetic fields (2008/2211) [2]

7

Many insurance companies already exclude coverage for the risks associated with electromagnetic fields

Insurance companies do not "close their eyes" to the issue of radiation as most people do. Already they take precautions, since potential claims for damage from artificial radiation can cost them dearly.

Especially on the effects of mobile phones, Guy Malyon, head broker insurance of Aon Global, notes that "The concern is that it could be the next big thing" while the insurance giant Lloyd's of London notes that "the number of reports on mobile telecommunications and its impact on health is immense, and the study findings are often conflicting" [9] .

Read the following interesting quote from the relevant article of the magazine "The Observer" [10] :

"Concern about the safety of mobile phones has prompted a leading Lloyd's underwriter to refuse to insure phone manufacturers against the risk of damage to users' health.

The move comes amid mounting concern about the industry's influence on research into the long-term effects of using a mobile.

The London market provides insurance for everything from aircraft to footballers' legs. But fears that mobile phones will be linked to illnesses such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease have prompted John Fenn, of underwriting group Stirling, to refuse to cover manufacturers against the risk of being sued if mobiles turn out to cause long-term damage.

Fenn said: ''There are people in the insurance market who close their eyes to the issue because they say there is no scientific proof of a problem. If you go back to asbestos, it "wasn't a problem" at one time either.' Asbestos claims helped bring the Lloyd's market to its knees in the early 1990s."

"The European Parliament is greatly concerned about the fact that insurance companies are tending to exclude coverage for the risks associated with EMFs from the scope of liability insurance policies, the implication clearly being that European insurers are already enforcing their version of the precautionary principle." European Parliament resolution 2008/2211 [2]

You can not rely on the goverment to protect you from the growing electromagnetic pollution

Today most governments refuse to warn people about the potential dangers despite repeated warnings by the European Parliament and many scientific organizations.

Given the changes that will be required, the losses of revenue (eg taxes on mobile phones talk time and telecommunication companies have become a huge source of revenue for governments), the authorities wait until there is undeniable "proven" health to apply new legislation.

Nowadays new wireless applications that emit radiation with new waveforms are permitted without prior research on the effects on human health.

In the past, however, a corresponding delay in taking measures has adversely affected the health of the population, as shown by the report of the European Environment Agency in the course of the delayed reactions of the authorities on issues such as asbestos, PCB, X-rays, etc.

"Waiting for high levels of scientific and clinical proof before taking action to prevent well-known risks can lead to very high health and economic costs, as was the case with asbestos, leaded petrol and tobacco." Council of Europe, Resolution 1815/2011 [11]

It's easy to reduce your daily burden from artificial electromagnetic radiation!

750familyradiationrpotection

Reducing your daily exposure to radiation does not depend only on avoiding mobile phone use or some electrical appliances, the use of which is usually transient and not continuous.

Deviations from the recommended limits for safe exposure might be due to a variety of hidden and obvious radiation sources such as cell phone towers (there are now in every neighborhood - often camouflaged), cordless phones and wireless modems (from own your or from neighboring homes), transformers, electricity cables, ungrounded electrical appliances, problems in electrical wiring (damaged insulation, errors in connections) etc.

What can you do?

“A major contemporary threat to the health of Society is man-made ‘electrosmog’. This non-ionising electromagnetic pollution of technological origin is particularly insidious, in that it escapes detection by the senses – a circumstance that, in general, tends to promote a rather cavalier attitude, particularly with respect to the necessity of ensuring an adequate degree of personal protection. Yet the nature of the pollution is such that there is literally ‘nowhere to hide’.” Dr. Gerard Hyland, Biophysics, University of Warwick, 2 times Nobel Prize contender Medicine [12]

Council of Europe, Resolution 1815/2011 [2]

"We are concerned about the body of evidence that indicates that exposure to electromagnetic fields interferes with basic human biology and may increase the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases." International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety, Porto Alegre Resolution (2009) [3]

"We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:

  • Learning, concentration, and behavioral disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder, ADD)
  • Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
  • Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's) and epilepsy
  • Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors

Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

  • Headaches, migraines
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Inner agitation Sleeplessness, daytime
  • sleepiness
  • Tinnitus
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms.

We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence, for:

  • Too often do we observe a marked concentration of particular illnesses in correspondingly HFMR-polluted areas or apartments;
  • Too often does a long-term disease or affliction improve or disappear in a relatively short time after reduction or elimination of HFMR pollution in the patient's environment;
  • Too often are our observations confirmed by on-site measurements of HFMR of unusual intensity.

On the basis of our daily experiences, we hold the current mobile communications technology (introduced in 1992 and since then globally extensive) and cordless digital telephones (DECT standard) to be among the fundamental triggers for this fatal development.

One can no longer evade these pulsed microwaves. They heighten the risk of already-present chemical/physical influences, stress the body's immune system, and can bring the body's still-functioning regulatory mechanisms to a halt. Pregnant women, children, adolescents, elderly and sick people are especially at risk.

Our therapeutic efforts to restore health are becoming increasingly less effective: the unimpeded and continuous penetration of radiation into living and working areas , particularly bedrooms, an essential place for relaxation, regeneration and healing, causes uninterrupted stress and prevents the patient's thorough recovery.

In the face of this disquieting development, we feel obliged to inform the public of our observations, especially since hearing that the German courts regard any danger from mobile telephone radiation as "purely hypothetical" (see the decisions of the constitutional court in Karlsruhe and the administrative court in Mannheim, Spring 2002).

What we experience in the daily reality of our medical practice is anything but hypothetical! We see the rising number of chronically sick patients also as the result of an irresponsible "safety limits policy", which fails to take the protection of the public from the short- and long-term effects of mobile telephone radiation as its criterion for action. Instead, it submits to the dictates of a technology already long recognized as dangerous. For us, this is the beginning of a very serious development through which the health of many people is being threatened.

We will no longer be made to wait upon further unreal research results - which in our experience are often influenced by the communications industry, while evidential studies go on being ignored. We find it to be of urgent necessity that we act now!

Above all, we are, as doctors, the advocates for our patients. In the interest of all those concerned, whose basic right to life and freedom from bodily harm is currently being put at stake, we appeal to those in the spheres of politics and public health. Please support the following demands with your influence:

  • New health-friendly communications techniques, given independent risk assessments before their introduction and, as immediate measures and transitional steps:
  • Stricter safety limits and major reduction of sender output and HFMR pollution on a justifiable scale, especially in areas of sleep and convalescence
  • A say on the part of local citizens and communities regarding the placing of antennae (which in a democracy should be taken for granted)
  • Education of the public, especially of mobile telephone users, regarding the health risks of electromagnetic fields
  • Ban on mobile telephone use by small children, and restrictions on use by adolescents
  • Ban on mobile telephone use and digital cordless (DECT) telephones in preschools, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, events halls, public buildings and vehicles (as with the ban on smoking)
  • Mobile telephone and HFMR-free zones (as with auto-free areas)
  • Revision of DECT standards for cordless telephones with the goal of reducing radiation intensity and limiting actual use time, as well as avoiding the biologically critical HFMR pulsation.
  • Industry-independent research, finally with the inclusion of amply available critical research results and our medical observations.''

The Freiburger Appeal - Union Resolution of Environmental Medicine, Germany (IGUMED) [4]

"We strongly advise limited use of cell phones, and other similar devices, by young children and teenagers, and we call upon governments to apply the Precautionary Principle as an interim measure while more biologically relevant standards are developed to protect against, not only the absorption of electromagnetic energy by the head, but also adverse effects of the signals on biochemistry, physiology and electrical biorhythms." Resolution of Venice (2008), International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (IECEM) [5]

"It's all a false alarm? No, the studies are competent, conclusive, powerful, scientific, factual and most certainly correct. The chicks are now dead as a dodo, the peaks in the EEG are obvious as are the dark spots in the brain, the leaks in the blood brain barrier, the breaks in the DNA, the irritation of the nerves. Red blood cells look like frog spawn, ears start to ring, the blood pressure goes up, and the level of concentration goes down. These are the facts. The researchers who made those and many other findings are competent, they are well known and renowned the world over, coming from prestigious universities, institutes, laboratories, agencies, from the WHO, even from the mobile phone service providers themselves. False alarm? No way."

“When I run up against a brick wall all of ten times and develop a blue bruise each single time, this would be an accurately observed and easily reproducible fact. If I am concerned about it, trying to tell my story or even publish it because I wish to stop this type of wall running, such action will be regarded as premature and unscientific, even as downright fear-mongering. And that because there were simply not enough others be-fore or after me who would have done the same thing, thus replication did not take place. Or if it did, the bruising in other people, age groups, skin colors, and with differ-ent momenta did not turn quite as blue but rather a shade of green. Anyhow, something is still missing, that is the conclusive explanation of the effect: Why does the bruise de-velop? And why in this way and no other, why this color, pain, dizziness? What is going on here? Without clear answers to these questions (and a lot more), it will remain scien-tifically untenable - by a long shot - despite the bruise, despite the pain and dizziness.“

Wolfgang Maes, German Institute for Building Biology [6]

"I have no doubt in my mind that at the present time the greatest polluting element in the earth's environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields." Dr. Robert Becker, 2 times Nobel Prize nominee [7]

"Thus in the frequency range 100 kHz to 300 GHz, 50 years ago it was scarcely possible to measure 10 pW/cm2 on the ground in our countries. Today, depending on the location, values one million to one thousand million times higher are recorded because of the explosion of telecommunications.

According to an increasing number of epidemiological and experimental studies, even slight exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields increases the risks of cancer, can be accompanied by nervous disorders and disruption of the circadian rhythms and seems capable of affecting developing organisms.

The results of many in vivo and in vitro studies show increasing clearly the interaction mechanisms underlying such disorders and illnesses, centered mainly in cell membrane, lead to disruption of melatonin secretions, ornithine decarboxylase activity and T-lymphocyte efficacy, testifying to the probable role of non-ionizing radiation in promoting cancer."

European Parliament Resolution B3-0280/92 [8]

“Very recently, new research is suggesting that nearly all the human plagues which emerged in the twentieth century, like common acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, female breast cancer, malignant melanoma and asthma, can be tied to some facet of our use of electricity. There is an urgent need for governments and individuals to take steps to minimize community and personal EMF exposures.” Samuel Milham MD, MPH, Medical epidemiologist in occupational epidemiology. [9]

"More meaningful is to ask whether there is an established potential risk to human health from exposure to GSM/TETRA radiation: the answer is undoubtedly ‘yes’. It is probably true to say that if a similar degree of risk and uncertainty as to subjective noxiousness obtained in the case of a new drug or foodstuff, it is unlikely that they would ever be licensed.

Quite apart from their weaker immune systems, pre-adolescent children are particularly vulnerable as recognized by the Stewart Report - because of the increased rate at which their cells are dividing (which makes them more susceptible to genetic damage), and because their nervous system is still developing - the smaller size of their heads and their thinner skulls increasing the amount of radiation that they absorb, particularly at 900MHz. Especially vulnerable to interference by the pulsed microwave radiation used in GSM is their electrical brain-wave activity, which does not settle into a stable pattern until puberty. The use of mobile phones by pre-adolescent children is thus to be strongly discouraged, and the siting of Base-station masts in the vicinity of schools and nurseries (including those hidden in church towers and in illuminated signs, such as those at petrol stations, for example) must be strongly resisted: financial gain must not be allowed to be the overriding consideration.

Adverse health effects in humans of the kinds already reported worldwide such as headaches, sleep disruption, impairment of short-term memory, etc. - whilst maybe not life-threatening in themselves, do nevertheless have a debilitating effect that undoubtedly affects general well-being, and which in the case of some children could well undermine their neurological and academic development, as is already evident from experience in the case of a number of infant/junior schools at which a GSM Base-station is located."[10]

Yet the nature of the pollution is such that there is literally ‘nowhere to hide’.

Furthermore, given the relatively short time for which we have been exposed to it, we have no evolutionary immunity either against any adverse effects it might directly have on our alive organism or, indirectly, against its possible interference with certain electromagnetic processes of natural origin, which appear to be essential for homeostasis, such as, for example, the Schumann resonance – a weak electromagnetic field that oscillates resonantly in the cavity between the earth’s surface and the ionosphere at frequencies close to those of human brain rhythms, isolation from which has been found to be deleterious to human health.

What distinguishes technologically produced electromagnetic fields from (the majority of) those of natural origin is their much higher degree of coherence. This means that their frequencies are particularly well-defined, a feature that facilitates the discernment of such fields by living organisms, including ourselves. This greatly increases their biological potency, and ‘opens the door’ to the possibility of frequency-specific, non-thermal influences of various kinds, against which existing Safety Guidelines – such as those issued by the International Commission for Non-ionising Radiation Protection ( ICNIRP) - afford no protection.” [21]

Dr. Gerard Hyland, Biophysics, University of Warwick, 2 times Nobel Prize contender

"If there are currently unrecognized adverse health effects from the use of mobile phones, children may be more vulnerable because of their developing nervous system, the greater absorption of energy in the tissues of the head (paragraph 4.37), and a longer lifetime of exposure. In line with our precautionary approach, at this time, we believe that the widespread use of mobile phones by children for non-essential calls should be discouraged. We also recommend that the mobile phone industry should refrain from promoting the use of mobile phones by children" Steward Report, INDEPENDENT EXPERT GROUP ON MOBILE PHONES, report for the British Pariliament [11]

"Scientific studies at the cellular level, whole animal level and involving human populations, shows compelling and comprehensive evidence that RF/MW exposure down to very low residential exposure levels, levels which are a minute fraction of present “safety standards”, results in altered brain function, sleep disruption, depression, chronic fatigue, headache, impaired memory and learning, adverse reproductive outcomes including miscarriage, still birth, cot death, prematurely and birth deformities. Many other adverse health effects have been found, predominantly cancer of many organs, especially brain cancer, leukemia, breast cancer and testicular cancer. Studies have also found that RF/MW exposed parents have more children with CNS cancers and other health defects. These effects are consistent with genetic damage caused by RF/MW. Many scientific studies have found chromosome aberrations and DNA damage with RF/MW exposure, the first being published in 1959. Three primary biological mechanisms are linked to these effects, genotoxicity, altered cellular calcium ions and melatonin reduction. With melatonin reduction there is usually a rise in serotonin which is associated with awakeness, alertness, anxious, anger, rage and violence depending on the serotonin level, the person and the circumstances. Most of these and many other neurological and health effects are associated with geomagnetic activity, through the Schumann Resonance signal mechanism which alters the human melatonin levels. Is strongly supports a causal connection between the extremely low intensity natural electronic signals and the thousands to billions of times higher humanly generated electromagnetic signals, and the listed health effects. Hence there is strong evidence that ELF and RF/MW is associated with accelerated aging (enhanced cell death and cancer) and moods, depression, suicide, anger, rage and violence, primarily through genotoxic damage, alteration of cellular calcium ions and the melatonin/serotonin balance." Dr. Neil Cherry, Lincoln University in New Zealand [8]

“The key point about electromagnetic pollution that the public has to realize is that it is not necessary that the intensity be large for a biological interaction to occur. There is now considerable evidence that extremely weak signals can have physiological consequences. These interactive intensities are about 1000 times smaller than the threshold values formerly estimated by otherwise knowledgeable theoreticians, who, in their vainglorious approach to science, rejected all evidence to the contrary as inconsistent with their magnificent calculations. These faulty estimated thresholds are yet to be corrected by both regulators and the media.”Abraham Liboff, researcher, Center of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Florida Atlantic [9]

"Studies of people have shown that both ELF and RF exposures result in an increased risk of cancer, and that this occurs at intensities that are too low to cause tissue heating. Unfortunately, all of our exposure standards are based on the false assumption that there are no hazardous effects at intensities that do not cause tissue heating. Based on the existing science, many public health experts believe it is possible we will face an epidemic of cancers in the future resulting from uncontrolled use of cell phones and increased population exposure to WiFi and other wireless devices. Thus it is important that all of us, and especially children, restrict our use of cell phones, limit exposure to background levels of Wi-Fi, and that government and industry discover ways in which to allow use of wireless devices without such elevated risk of serious disease. We need to educate decision-makers that ‘business as usual’ is unacceptable. The importance of this public health issue can not be underestimated.” Dr. David Carpenter, School of Public Health, Albany, New York University [9]

"Ambient man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs), across a range of frequencies, are a serious environmental issue. Yet most environmentalists know little about it, perhaps because the subject has been the purview of physicists and engineers for so long that biologists have lost touch with electromagnetism’s fundamental inclusion in the biological paradigm. All living cells and indeed whole living beings, no matter what genus or species, are dynamic coherent electrical systems utterly reliant on bioelectricity for life’s most basic metabolic processes. It turns out that most living things are fantastically sensitive to vanishingly small EMF exposures. Living cells interpret such exposures as part of our normal cellular activities (think heartbeats, brainwaves, cell division itself, etc.) The problem is, man-made electromagnetic exposures aren’t “normal.” They are artificial artifacts, with unusual intensities, signaling characteristics, pulsing patterns, and wave forms, that don’t exist in nature. And they can misdirect cells in myriad ways. Every aspect of the ecosystem may be affected, including all living species from animals, humans, plants and even microorganisms in water and soil. We are already seeing problems in sentinel species like birds, bats, and bees. Wildlife is known to abandon areas when cell towers are placed. Radiofrequency radiation (RF)—the part of the electromagnetic spectrum used in all-things-wireless today—is a known immune system suppressor, among other things. RF is a form of energetic air pollution and we need to understand it as such. Humans are not the only species being affected. The health of our planet may be in jeopardy from this newest environmental concern—added to all the others. Citizens need to call upon government to fund appropriate research and to get industry influence out of the dialogue. We ignore this at our own peril now.” Blake Levit, author of "Electromagnetic Fields, A Consumer's Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves" [9]

“Very recently, new research is suggesting that nearly all the human plagues which emerged in the twentieth century, like common acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, female breast cancer, malignant melanoma and asthma, can be tied to some facet of our use of electricity. There is an urgent need for governments and individuals to take steps to minimize community and personal EMF exposures.” Dr. Samuel Milham, Medical researcher occupational epidemiology [9]

Their EMF exposure is generally several orders of magnitude under the limits of internationally accepted standards." World Health Organization [13]

“It is evident that various biological alterations, including immune system modulation, are present in electrohypersensitive persons. There must be an end to the pervasive nonchalance, indifference and lack of heartfelt respect for the plight of these persons. It is clear something serious has happened and is happening. Every aspect of electrohypersensitive peoples’ lives, including the ability to work productively in society, have healthy relations and find safe, permanent housing, is at stake. The basics of life are becoming increasingly inaccessible to a growing percentage of the world’s population. I strongly advise all governments to take the issue of electromagnetic health hazards seriously and to take action while there is still time. There is too great a risk that the ever increasing RF-based communications technologies represent a real danger to humans, especially because of their exponential, ongoing and unchecked growth. Governments should act decisively to protect public health by changing the exposure standards to be biologically-based, communicating the results of the independent science on this topic and aggressively researching links with a multitude of associated medical conditions.” Dr. Johansson, Neurology Section, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm [14]

“Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is the emerging health problem of the 21st century. It is imperative health practitioners, governments, schools and parents learn more about it. The human health stakes are significant” Dr. William Rea, former president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine [14]

“It took about 100 years for us to figure out that cigarette smoke was dangerous,” Carlo says. “It took about 80 years to figure out that asbestos was dangerous. [But] it took us five years to figure out that mobile phones are dangerous, once we started to look. What we’re talking about here is an effect that, at least in terms that are able to be recognized, greater than smoking and asbestos.” Dr. George Carlo, Founder Safe Wireless Initiative [15]

"For the first time in history, we face a situation when most children and teenagers in the world are continuously exposed to the potentially adverse influence of the electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile phones.Electromagnetic field is an important biotropic factor, affecting not just a human health in general, but also the processes of the higher nervous activity, including behavior and thinking. Radiation directly affects human brain when people use mobile phones.

Despite the recommendations, listed in the Sanitary Rules of the Ministry of Health, which insist that persons under 18 years should not use mobile phones (SanPiN 2.1.8/2.2.4.1190-03 point 6.9), children and teenagers became the target group for the marketing the mobile communications.

The current safety standards for exposure to microwaves from the mobile phones have been developed for the adults and don’t consider the characteristic features of the children’s organism. The WHO considers the protection of the children’s health from possible negative influence of the EMF of the mobile phones as a highest priority task. This problem has also been confirmed by the Scientific Committee of the European Commission, by national authorities of the European and Asian countries, by participants of the International scientific conferences on biological effects of the EMF.

Potential risk for the children’s health is very high:

  • the absorption of the electromagnetic energy in a child’s head is considerably higher than that in the head of an adult (children’s brain has higher conductivity, smaller size, thin skull bones, smaller distance from the antenna etc.);
  • children’s organism has more sensitivity to the EMF, than the adult’s;
  • children’s brain has higher sensitivity to the accumulation of the adverse effects under conditions of chronic exposure to the EMF
  • EMF affects the formation of the process of the higher nervous activity;
  • today’s children will spend essentially longer time using mobile phones, than today’s adults will.

According to the opinion of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, the following health hazards are likely to be faced by the children mobile phone users in the nearest future:

  • disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability, sleep problems, increase in sensitivity to the stress, increased epileptic readiness.

Expected (possible) remote health risks:

  • brain tumors, tumors of acoustical and vestibular, nerves (in the age of 25-30 years), Alzheimer’s disease, “got dementia”, depressive syndrome, and the other types of degeneration of the nervous structures of the brain (in the age of 50 to 60).

The members of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection emphasize ultimate urgency to defend children’s health from the influence of the EMF of the mobile communication systems. We appeal to the government authorities, to the entire society to pay closest attention to this coming threat and to take adequate measures in order to prevent negative consequences to the future generation’s health. The children using mobile communication are not able to realize that they subject their brain to the EMF radiation and their health – to the risk. We believe that this risk is not much lower than the risk to the children’s health from tobacco or alcohol. It is our professional obligation not to let damage the children’s health by inactivity."

Russian Commission for the Protection against Non-Ionizing Radiation [16]

"We need to test the electromagnetic exposure of the sleeping location of the mother during pregnancy and also her working area, if she is working. If the mother is sleeping in strong electromagnetic fields the child will be neurologically abnormal. Within 2 years the child will develop all the signs of autism, neurological dysfunction, hyperactivity, learning disorders and so on." Dr. Dietrich Klingkchart, Institute of Neurobiology Washington [17]

"In the past, we applied microwaves for birth control. Today we make phone calls with it. Go figure." Dr. Huai Chiang, advisor to the World Health Organization in radiation issues, Medical School of Zhejiang China [6]

"The adverse effects of electrosmog may take decades to be appreciated, although some, like carcinogenicity, are already starting to surface. This gigantic experiment on our children and grandchildren could result in massive damage to mind and body with the potential to produce a disaster of unprecedented proportions, unless proper precautions are immediately implemented." Paul Rosch, professor of medicine at New York Medical School [14]

"The European Parliament,(…)

A. whereas electromagnetic fields (EMFs) exist in nature and have consequently always been present on earth; whereas, however, in recent decades, environmental exposure to man-made sources of EMFs has risen constantly, driven by demand for electricity, increasingly more specialised wireless technologies, and changes in the organisation of society; whereas the end effect is that every individual is now being exposed to a complex mixture of electric and magnetic fields of different frequencies, both at home and at work,

B. whereas wireless technology (mobile phones, Wi-Fi/WiMAX, Bluetooth, DECT landline telephones) emits EMFs that may have adverse effects on human health,

C. whereas most European citizens, especially young people aged from 10 to 20, use a mobile phone, an object serving a practical purpose and as a fashion accessory, and whereas there are continuing uncertainties about the possible health risks, particularly to young people whose brains are still developing,

D. whereas the dispute within the scientific community regarding the potential health risks arising from EMFs has intensified since 12 July 1999, when exposure limits for fields in the 0 Hz to 300 GHz range were laid down in Recommendation 1999/519/EC,

E. whereas the fact that the scientific community has reached no definite conclusions has not prevented some national or regional governments, in China, Switzerland, and Russia, as well as in at least nine EU Member States, from setting what are termed "preventive" exposure limits, that is to say, lower than those advocated by the Commission and its independent scientific committee, the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks(7) ,

F. whereas actions to limit the exposure of the general public to EMFs should be balanced against improvements to quality of life, in terms of safety and security, brought about by devices transmitting EMFs,

G. whereas among the scientific projects arousing both interest and controversy is the Interphone epidemiological study, financed by an EU contribution of EUR 3 800 000, primarily under the Fifth RTD Framework Programme(8) , the findings of which have been awaited since 2006,

H. whereas, however, there are some points that appear to be the subject of general agreement, in particular the idea that reactions to microwave exposure vary from one person to another, the need, as a matter of priority, to conduct exposure tests under actual conditions in order to assess the non-thermal effects associated with radio-frequency (RF) fields, and the fact that children exposed to EMFs are especially vulnerable(9) ,

I. whereas the EU has laid down exposure limits to protect workers from the effects of EMFs; whereas on the basis of the precautionary principle such measures should also be taken for the sections of population concerned, such as residents and consumers,

J. whereas the Special Eurobarometer report on Electromagnetic Fields (No 272a of June 2007) indicates that the majority of citizens do not feel that the public authorities inform them adequately on measures to protect them from EMFs,

K. whereas it is necessary to continue investigations into intermediate and very low frequencies so that conclusions can be drawn as to their effects on health,

L. whereas the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) must not be threatened by Directive 2004/40/EC as MRI technology is at the cutting edge of research, diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases for patients in Europe,

M. whereas the MRI safety standard IEC/EN 60601-2-33 establishes limit values for EMFs which have been set so that any danger to patients and workers is excluded.

1. Urges the Commission to review the scientific basis and adequacy of the EMF limits as laid down in Recommendation 1999/519/EC and report to the Parliament; calls for the review to be undertaken by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks;

2. Calls for particular consideration of biological effects when assessing the potential health impact of electromagnetic radiation, especially given that some studies have found the most harmful effects at lowest levels; calls for active research to address potential health problems by developing solutions that negate or reduce the pulsating and amplitude modulation of the frequencies used for transmission;

3. Maintains that as well as, or as an alternative to, amending European EMFs limits, the Commission, working in coordination with experts from Member States and the industries concerned (electricity companies, telephone operators and manufacturers of electrical appliances including mobile phones), should draw up a guide to available technology options serving to reduce exposure to EMFs;

4. Notes that industry stakeholders as well as relevant infrastructure managers and competent authorities can already influence certain factors, for example setting provisions with regards to the distance between a given site and the transmitters, the height of the site in relation to the height of the base station, or the direction of a transmitting antenna in relation to living environments, and, indeed, should obviously do so in order to reassure, and afford better protection to, the people living close to such facilities; calls for optimal placement of masts and transmitters and further calls for the sharing of masts and transmitters placed in this way by providers so as to limit the proliferation of poorly positioned masts and transmitters; calls on the Commission and Member States to draw up appropriate guidance;

5. Invites the Member States and local and regional authorities to create a one-stop shop for authorisation to install antennas and repeaters, and to include among their urban development plans a regional antenna plan

6. Urges the authorities responsible for authorising the siting of mobile telephony antennas to reach agreement, jointly with the operators in that sector, on the sharing of infrastructure, in order to reduce the volume thereof and the exposure of the public to EMFs;

7. Acknowledges the efforts of mobile communications and other EMF-transmitting wireless technologies to avoid damaging the environment, and in particular to address climate change;

8. Considers that, given the increasing numbers of legal actions and measures by public authorities having the effect of a moratorium on the installation of new EMF-transmitting equipment, it is in the general interest to encourage solutions based on negotiations involving industry stakeholders, public authorities, military authorities and residents" associations to determine the criteria for setting up new GSM antennas or high-voltage power lines, and to ensure at least that schools, crèches, retirement homes, and health care institutions are kept clear, within a specific distance determined by scientific criteria, of facilities of this type;

9. Calls on the Member States to make available to the public, jointly with the operators in the sector, maps showing exposure to high-voltage power lines, radio frequencies and microwaves, and especially those generated by telecommunications masts, radio repeaters and telephone antennas. Calls for that information to be displayed on an internet page so that it can easily be consulted by the public, and for it to be disseminated in the media;

10. Proposes that the Commission consider the possibility of using funding from the Trans-European Energy Networks to investigate the effects of EMFs at very low frequencies, and particularly in electrical power lines,

11. Calls on the Commission, during the 2009-2014 parliamentary term, to launch an ambitious programme to gauge the electromagnetic compatibility between waves created artificially and those emitted naturally by the human body with a view to determining whether microwaves might ultimately have undesirable consequences for human health;

12. Calls on the Commission to present a yearly report on the level of electromagnetic radiation in the EU, its sources, and actions taken in the EU to better protect human health and the environment;

13. Calls on the Commission to find a solution enabling Directive 2004/40/EC to be implemented more rapidly and thus ensure that workers are properly protected against EMFs, just as they are already protected under two other Community acts against noise(10) and vibration(11) and to introduce a derogation for MRI under Article 1 of that Directive.

14. Deplores the fact that, as a result of repeated postponements since 2006, the findings of the Interphone study have yet to be published, the purpose of this international epidemiological study being to establish whether there is a link between use of mobile phones and certain types of cancer, including brain, auditory nerve, and parotid gland tumours;

15. Draws attention in this context to the appeal for caution from the coordinator of the Interphone study, Elisabeth Cardis, who, in the light of existing knowledge, recommends, as far as children are concerned, that mobile phones should not be used beyond reasonable limits and that landlines should be preferred;

16. Believes in any event that it is up to the Commission, which has an important contribution to the financing of this global study, to ask those in charge of the project why no definitive findings have been published and, should it receive an answer, to inform Parliament and the Member States without delay;

17. Also suggests to the Commission, to make for efficiency in policy and budget terms, that the Community funding earmarked for studies on EMFs be partly switched to finance a wide-ranging awareness campaign to familiarise young Europeans with good mobile phone techniques, such as the use of hands-free kits, keeping calls short, switching off phones when not in use (such as when in classes) and using phones in areas that have good reception;

18. Considers that such awareness-raising campaigns should also familiarise young Europeans with the health risks associated with household devices and the importance of switching off devices rather than leaving them on stand-by;

19. Calls on the Commission and Member States to increase research and development funding for the evaluation of potential long-term adverse effects of mobile telephony radio frequencies; calls also for an increase in public calls for proposals for investigation of the harmful effects of multiple exposure to different sources of EMFs, particularly where children are concerned;

20. Proposes that the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies be given the additional task of assessing scientific integrity in order to help the Commission forestall possible cases of risk, conflict of interests, or even fraud that might arise now that competition for researchers has become keener;

21. Calls on the Commission, in recognition of the public concern in many Member States, to work with all relevant stakeholders, such as national experts, non-governmental organisations and industrial sectors, to improve the availability of, and access to, up-to-date information understandable to non-specialists on wireless technology and protection standards;

22. Calls on the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be more transparent and open to dialogue with all stakeholders in standard setting;

23. Condemns certain particularly aggressive marketing campaigns by telephone operators in the run-up to Christmas and other special occasions, including for example the sale of mobile phones designed solely for children or free call time packages aimed at teenagers;

24. Proposes that the EU's indoor air quality policy should encompass the study of "wireless" domestic appliances, which, like Wi-Fi for Internet access and digital enhanced cordless telecommunications (DECT) telephones, have been widely adopted in recent years in public places and in the home, with the result that citizens are being continuously exposed to microwave emissions;

25. Calls, given its constant concern to improve consumer information, for the technical standards of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation to be amended with a view to imposing labelling requirements whereby the transmitting power would have to be specified and every wireless-operated device accompanied by an indication that it emitted microwaves;

26. Calls on the Council and Commission, in coordination with the Member States and the Committee of the Regions, to encourage the introduction of a single standard designed to ensure that local residents are subjected to as low a degree of exposure as possible when high-voltage grids are extended;

27. Is greatly concerned about the fact that insurance companies are tending to exclude coverage for the risks associated with EMFs from the scope of liability insurance policies, the implication clearly being that European insurers are already enforcing their version of the precautionary principle;

28. Calls on Member States to follow the example of Sweden and to recognise persons that suffer from electrohypersensitivity as being disabled so as to grant them adequate protection as well as equal opportunities;

29. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the governments and parliaments of the Member States, the Committee of the Regions, and the WHO.

European Parliament resolution on the health problems associated with electromagnetic fields (2008/2211) [18]

The current IEEE and ICNIRP standards are not sufficiently protective of public health with respect to chronic exposure to modulated fields (particularly new technologies that are pulse-modulated and heavily used in cellular telephony)." BioInitiative Report [12]

"Physicians of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine recognize that patients are being adversely impacted by electromagnetic frequency (EMF) and radiofrequency (RF) fields and are becoming more electromagnetically sensitive.

Τhe AAEM recommends that physicians consider patients’ total electromagnetic exposure in their diagnosis and treatment, as well as recognition that electromagnetic and radiofrequency field exposure may be an underlying cause of a patient’s disease process.

Based on double‐blinded, placebo controlled research in humans,1 medical conditions and disabilities that would more than likely benefit from avoiding electromagnetic and radiofrequency exposure include, but are not limited to:

  • Neurological conditions such as paresthesias, somnolence, cephalgia, dizziness,
  • unconsciousness, depression
  • Musculoskeletal effects including pain, muscle tightness, spasm, fibrillation
  • Heart disease and vascular effects including arrhythmia, tachycardia, flushing,
  • edema
  • Pulmonary conditions including chest tightness, dyspnea, decreased pulmonary
  • function
  • Gastrointestinal conditions including nausea, belching
  • Ocular (burning)
  • Oral (pressure in ears, tooth pain)
  • Dermal (itching, burning, pain)
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction (dysautonomia).

Based on numerous studies showing harmful biological effects from EMF and RF exposure, medical conditions and disabilities that would more than likely benefit from avoiding exposure include, but are not limited to:

  • Neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
  • Neurological conditions (Headaches, depression, sleep disruption, fatigue, dizziness, tremors, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, decreased memory, attention deficit disorder, anxiety, visual disruption).
  • Fetal abnormalities and pregnancy
  • Genetic defects and cancer
  • Liver disease and genitourinary disease"

American Academy of Environmental Medicine Recommendations Regarding Electromagnetic and Radiofrequency Exposure [19]

"Because there are suggestions that RF exposure may be more hazardous for the fetus and child due to their greater susceptibility, prudent avoidance is one approach to keeping children’s exposure as low as possible." World Health Organization [20]

“The non-ionizing radiation protection standards recommended by international standards organizations, and supported by the World Health Organization, are inadequate. Existing guidelines are based on results from acute exposure studies and only thermal effects are considered. A world wide application of the Precautionary Principle is required. In addition, new standards should be developed to take various physiological conditions into consideration, e.g., pregnancy, newborns, children, and elderly people.“ The Venice Resolution Initiated by the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety [22]

"During critical windows in neurogenesis the brain is susceptible to numerous environmental insults; common medically relevant exposures include ionizing radiation, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and stress. The effects of these agents are dependent on dose and timing of exposure. Even small exposures during periods of neurogenesis have a more profound effect than exposure as an adult. (…) The exposure to cellular telephones in pregnancy may have a comparable effect on the fetus and similar implications for society as do exposures to other common neurodevelopmental toxicants." Researchers Tamir, Aldad, Geliang, Xiao-Bing, Hugh, Yale University [23]

“There are reports of biological effects of EMF at levels below the well recognised standards and guidelines. WHO would now like to develop a framework and guidelines that would allow the application of the PP not only for EMF but also for WHO policy generally. It is not question of whether we apply it. It is a question of how we apply it.” World Health Organization [24]

"There has been a 60-fold increase in ASD in recent years, which cannot be accounted for by improvements in diagnostic methods and can only be explained by changes in the environment. This increase corresponds in time to the proliferation of mobile telecommunications, Wi-Fi, and microwave ovens as well as extremely low frequency fields from household wiring and domestic appliances. We can now explain at least some of this in terms of electromagnetically-induced membrane leakage leading to brain hyperactivity and abnormal brain development." Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, former lecturer Imperial College London [25]

"We have considerable evidence that the symptoms of some neurological illnesses in children, such as ADD and autism, can be exasperated by dirty electricity and that behavior improves considerably in clean environments." Dr Magda Havas, Trent University, Canada [26]

"WiFi/wLAN routers, DECT phones and other wireless devices like baby monitors produce radio frequency emissions that will affect millions of people and babies in their homes, and should be halted until other, less harmful options are investigated." Lukas Margaritis, professor, Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology, University of Athens, Athens, Greece [27]

“(congress should) establish cell phone and wireless-free neighborhoods, transportation options, government buildings, and public spaces; require employers to establish wireless free zones; and, mandate the removal of cellular and wireless technologies from public schools and their properties.” ElectromagneticHealth.org petition to the American Congress [28]

“(governments should) designate wireless-free zones in cities, in public buildings (schools, hospitals, residential areas) and, on public transit, to permit access by persons who are hypersensitive to EMF.” Benevento Resolution, International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety [29]

Electromagnetic fields of all frequencies represent one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences, about which anxiety and speculation are spreading. All populations are now exposed to varying degrees of EMF, and the levels will continue to increase as technology advances. World Health Organization [30]

Is electromagnetic radiation dangerous for children and pregnant? A cause for rise in autism?

Are there health effects on children and pregnant women from the radiation of mobile phones, wireless modems, laptops, tablets, cell phone masts, power cables etc; What's the connection with the modern rise of childhood cognition and behavior problems (hyperactivity, autism, etc)? What does the Institute of Neurobiology at Washington proposes during pregnancy? How can children and pregnant women reduce their electromagnetic exposure?

 “The limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields which have been set for the general public are obsolete. They do not take account of developments in information and communication technologies or vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, newborn babies and children. “ European Parliament, Resolution 2007/2252 [1]

Rise in childhood hyperactivity, aggression, attention deficit syndrome and autism - What are the causes?

The statistics record a significant and continuous increase in the percentage of children who have hyperactivity, ADHD (or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD - ADD) or autistic spectrum disorders, aggression, psychological problems etc.

Children with autism have difficulty to communicate and socialize, have verbal difficulties, obsessions and repetitive behavior, abnormal interests etc. Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, lack concentration and / or are hyperactive and according to research have lower school performance and academic progress.

According to some data, today 1 in 91 children born become autistic [2] (higher the percentage of boys), while in the 80 ' autistic was born only 1 in 10,000 children. [3]

Similarly, the percentage of children exhibiting ADHD is estimated at 3-7% [4].

In the USA, for ADD, the medication Ritalin, which is a stimulant of the nervous system, is prescribed in 3% of children [5]! Long-term use of Ritalin may cause delay in the development of the child.

Theories about the cause of contemporary increase in autism are many: environmental factors, vaccines, increased stress and drug use during pregnancy, allergies to milk etc.

Some scientists argue that the condition is associated with the exposure of the mother and / or child in common sources of electromagnetic radiation, which result in incomplete or problematic development of children's brains.

"There has been a 60-fold increase in ASD in recent years, which cannot be accounted for by improvements in diagnostic methods and can only be explained by changes in the environment. We can now explain at least some of this in terms of electromagnetically-induced membrane leakage leading to brain hyperactivity and abnormal brain development." Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, former lecturer Imperial College London [6]

During critical windows in neurogenesis the brain is susceptible to numerous environmental insults; common medically relevant exposures include ionizing radiation, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and stress. The effects of these agents are dependent on dose and timing of exposure. Even small exposures during periods of neurogenesis have a more profound effect than exposure as an adult. (…) The exposure to cellular telephones in pregnancy may have a comparable effect on the fetus and similar implications for society as do exposures to other common neurodevelopmental toxicants. Researchers Tamir, Aldad, Geliang, Xiao-Bing, Hugh, Yale University [7]

Why are developing organisms are more vulnerable to radiation?

  • their immune system is less developed than that of adults
  • increased proliferation of cells makes them more vulnerable to genetic damage [8]
  • the biological effects on cell growth caused by exposure to artificial radiation are much greater in young and rapidly growing cells than in senescent (Kwee 2003 [9])
  • the penetration of radiation is deeper in minors because of their smaller brain size, thinner bones and larger water capacity (increased conductivity)

See the difference in the absorption of radiation from mobile phones in the brains of an adult, a child 10 years old and a child 5 years old (from left to right) [10]:

brains

Perhaps the continuous increase of childhood brain cancer cases in England, Australia, USA and Japan [11] and the fact that 20% of the brain tumors in children is malignant (while in adult only 2% are) [12], is not accidental..

"The adverse effects of electrosmog may take decades to be appreciated, although some, like carcinogenicity, are already starting to surface. This gigantic experiment on our children and grandchildren could result in massive damage to mind and body with the potential to produce a disaster of unprecedented proportions, unless proper precautions are immediately implemented." Paul Rosch, professor of medicine at New York Medical School [13

Wireless radiation is the biggest problem

The wireless radiation, with pulsed waveform, emitted by cell phone masts, mobile and cordless phones, wireless modems (Wi-Fi) etc:

  • inhibits the formation of normal electromagnetic activity of the brain, which is stabilized at around the age 12, which explains the increasing incidence of hyperactivity and epilepsy in children according to Dr. Gerard Hyland, biophysicist at Warwick University and 2 times nominated for the Nobel Medicine Prize [14]. furius child talking to cell phone
  • boy"Lead to sleep disturbances, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, reduced learning ability, pregnancy miscarriages, premature infant mortality, congenital deformities, (...) leukemia, cancer of the brain, breast and testicular cancer (...) while are exposed to wireless radiation parents have children with higher rates of cancers of the central nervous system and other health problems "[15] according to Dr. Neil Cherry Lincoln University, New Zealand
  • Detunes initial calibration of brain networks and the mirror-neuron system (mirror neuron system) in newborns, leading to autistic behavior patterns (Thornton [16]) and are a possible cause of the contemporary increase in cases of autism (Kane [17])
  • causing the creation of many random and useless neural connections, which explains the usually larger skull of autistic children, according to Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, former assistant of Imperial College London [18]
  • "A possible explanation of the increase in behavioral problems in developing countries" according to researchers at Yale University that showed that "mice exposed to radiation from mobile phones during pregnancy was hyperactive and had reduced memory" [19]
  • may increase the risk of cancer in children (and broadcasting antennas [20], [21])

"Because there are suggestions that RF exposure may be more hazardous for the fetus and child due to their greater susceptibility, prudent avoidance is one approach to keeping children’s exposure as low as possible." World Health Organization [22]

Adverse health effects in humans of the kinds already reported worldwide such as headaches, sleep disruption, impairment of short-term memory, etc. - whilst maybe not life-threatening in themselves, do nevertheless have a debilitating effect that undoubtedly affects general well-being, and which in the case of some children could well undermine their neurological and academic development, as is already evident from experience in the case of a number of infant/junior schools at which a GSM Base-station is located." Dr. Gerard Hyland, Biophysics, University of Warwick, 2 times Nobel Prize contender [23]

Other effects on pregnancy from wireless radiation

  • a 2007 study [24] showed that the use of mobile phones increases the risk of miscarriage while a 2013 study [25] showed that women who used more mobile phones and computers during pregnancy had the most premature births.
  • Researchers (Nakamura, 1997 [26], 2000 [27]) recorded malfunctions in the ovaries and placenta, increased stress levels and reduced activity of natural killer cells due to exposure to wireless radiation during pregnancy.
  • Late embryonic development due to exposure to cell phone radiation was recorded on animal research [28]. The authors suggest that the use of mobile phones by pregnant women may lead to hazards. Effects in embryogenesis were also recorded by Tsybulin 2012 [29]

 Higher wireless radiation values are usually recorded in apartments because of the multitude of wireless applications from neighbors, in offices due to wireless telephones and computer networks and in densely populated areas because of the presence of more antennas of all types, in houses near cell phone towers and on the upper floors of buildings because they are more exposed to wireless radiation than the lower floors.

What does the Neurobiology Institute of Washington suggest to pregnant women

Study of the Institute of Neurobiology at Washington recorded 8 times more radiation from electrical sources and 20 times more radiation from wireless sources in the beds that were used during pregnancy by mothers who gave birth to autistic children [30] .

Similarly, they recorded 8 times more radiation from electric sources and 13 times more radiation from wireless sources in the beds of children with autism compared to healthy children.

The Director of the Institute, Dr. Klingkchart, proposes several preventive measures for women who are pregnant, emphasizing in the prevention of high exposure to artificial radiation.

Dietrich Klingkchart, Institute of Neurobiology Washington [31]

He also claims that modern electromagnetic pollution is affecting the healthy development of the brain and is associated with the ever increasing psychiatric illness and violence in the western world. Listen the interesting interview with Dr. Klingkchart's suggestions:

Read the announcement of the Russian Commission for Protection against Non-Ionizing Radiation [32]:

"For the first time in history, we face a situation when most children and teenagers in the world are continuously exposed to the potentially adverse influence of the electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile phones. Electromagnetic field is an important biotropic factor, affecting not just a human health in general, but also the processes of the higher nervous activity, including behavior and thinking.

  • the absorption of the electromagnetic energy in a child’s head is considerably higher than that in the head of an adult (children’s brain has higher conductivity, smaller size, thin skull bones, smaller distance from the antenna etc.);
  • children’s organism has more sensitivity to the EMF, than the adult’s;
  • children’s brain has higher sensitivity to the accumulation of the adverse effects under conditions of chronic exposure to the EMF
  • EMF affects the formation of the process of the higher nervous activity;

"WiFi/wLAN routers, DECT phones and other wireless devices like baby monitors produce radio frequency emissions that will affect millions of people and babies in their homes, and should be halted until other, less harmful options are investigated." Lukas Margaritis, professor, Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology, University of Athens, Athens, Greece [33]

Risks from "dirty electricity"

Another modern electromagnetic problem is the increased distortion of the simple sinusoidal signal of 50-60Hz mains harmonics with high frequencies due to increased use of fluorescent lamps, AC adapters, electronic switches dimmer, air conditioner inverter, plasma TVs, photovoltaic systems etc.

This phenomenon is called "dirty Electricity" and some link it to the attention deficit syndrome, multiple sclerosis and diabetes [34].

The researcher Magda Havas argues that: "We have considerable evidence that the symptoms of some neurological illnesses in children, such as ADD and autism, can be exasperated by dirty electricity and that behaviour improves considerably in clean environments." [35].

High magnetic fields and miscarriages, children leukemia, asthma, obesity

High magnetic fields from power lines (high, medium and low voltage), transformers, etc. are linked to:

  • childhood leukemia (doubled risk for children who are exposed to values above 300nT [36], [37], [38]) which is the most common form of child cancer
  • childhood asthma (15% increase in incidence for each 100nT exposure of the mother to magnetic fields [39]) and
  • abortion during pregnancy [40], [41]

Recent surveys suggest that "The report of the mother at high magnetic fields during pregnancy can be a new, unknown until now, an aggravating factor that contributes to the global epidemic of childhood obesity" [42]

BioInitiative Report 2012 further notes that "Extremely low frequency EMF effects induced due to electric(E) blankets (…) have the potential for providing excessive body heating, which may have adverse effect on sperm (Van Demark and Free 1970), leading to adverse effect on the process of embryogenesis (Edwards et al 1974,Lacy et al 1981). This high temperature could also be teratogenic in humans too (Miller et al 1978, Fraser and Skelton 1978).It is obvious that either the heat or the electromagnetic fields produced by electric or bed heating might affect the fetus."[43]

Electrohypersensitivity: What you need to know about the allergy of the 21st century

In the past it has been called "yuppie flu" and "microwave disease". Its symptoms include unexplained allergies, whistling in the ears, tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmias, fatigue, numbness of the head, constant headaches, etc. Are you also affected by the growing electromagnetic pollution from cell phone masts, Wi-Fi networks, cordless phones etc?

 electrohypersensitivity

Scientists today are linking the increase of electromagnetic pollution with many unexplained symptoms that afflict more and more every day:

  • Nausea,headaches and migraines
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Numbness in the face or other body parts
  • Dry eyes and sight problems
  • Inability to concentrate and unexplained fatigue
  • Depression
  • Tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmia
  • Hyperactivity and insomnia
  • Redness and rashes
  • Dryness in the throat and mouth
  • Swollen sinuses and symptoms rhinitis

The "allergic" reaction to artificial electromagnetic radiation is called "electrohypersensitivity", it has been recognized by the World Health Organization and is considered likely to influence in the following years a significant proportion of the population in developed countries.

In the past the term "microwave illness" has been used to describe symptoms of employees working near broadcasting antennas and radars and the term "yuppie flu" for symptoms of corporate executives overexposed to mobile phones and electronic office equipment.

Their EMF exposure is generally several orders of magnitude under the limits of internationally accepted standards." World Health Organization [1]

Medical associations warn

The Austrian Medical Association notes [2]:

"There has been a sharp rise in unspecific, often stress-associated health problems that increasingly present physicians with the challenge of complex differential diagnosis. A cause that has been accorded little attention so far is increasing electrosmog exposure at home, at work and during leisure activities, occurring in addition to chronic stress in personal and working life. It correlates with an overall situation of chronic stress that can lead to burnout.

" The Freiburger Appeal [3] from the Union of Environmental Medicine, Germany (IGUMED), signed by thousands of doctors and scientists from around the world sounded the alarm:

"We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:

  • Learning, concentration, and behavioural disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder, ADD)
  • Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
  • Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's) and epilepsy
  • Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors

Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

  • Headaches, migraines
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Inner agitation
  • Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
  • Tinnitus
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms.

We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence, for:

  • Too often do we observe a marked concentration of particular illnesses in correspondingly HFMR-polluted areas or apartments;
  • Too often does a long-term disease or affliction improve or disappear in a relatively short time after reduction or elimination of HFMR pollution in the patient's environment;

We see the rising number of chronically sick patients also as the result of an irresponsible "safety limits policy", which fails to take the protection of the public from the short- and long-term effects of mobile telephone radiation as its criterium for action. Instead, it submits to the dictates of a technology already long recognized as dangerous. For us, this is the beginning of a very serious development through which the health of many people is being threatened."

More health warnings..

The first recorded case

Per Segerbäck, was a telecommunications engineer, that was working from the early 80's as a senior executive in Ellemtel, a subsidiary of the Swedish company mobile phones Ericson and he helped develop the mobile networks that today have spread in every part of world.

After 10 years of work he and almost all his colleagues had continuous nausea, headaches and skin redness. Because the found relief only outside the office, the came to the conclusion that these symptoms were due to the elevated electromagnetic radiation from the cell phone antennas, computers, fluorescent lightings etc.

Ericson company wanted to keep Segerbäck, so they electromagneticaly shielded his office, they replaced his computers with low EFM ones and gave him electromagnetic shielded clothes to wear so he could move out of the office.

In the mid 90's, when the first mobile networks began to appear in Stockholm and the avoidance of the radiation was impossible, Segerbäck retired to a farmhouse in the countryside. There he lives so far away from mobile phone masts and the electricity network, using an external battery 12Volt for essential needs. [4]

How chronic exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation can lead to health problems

Dr. Blank, a professor at Columbia University and researcher in bioelectromagnitism explains that our cells have a stressful reaction to artificial electromagnetic fields as they do with other environmental toxins (heavy metals, etc.) [5].

The human DNA functions as an antenna which receives even low power low and high frequency signals and produces stress proteins.

The mechanism of adaptation to stress triggers our hormonal system to cope with any challenge presented. Unfortunately it is designed to operate for a temporary period.

Chronic production of stress proteins, as is the case of constant exposure to multiple sources of radiation is:

  • associated with sleep problems, depression, headaches, gastric and skin problems, obesity, heart disease, asthma, infections, etc. [6]
  • exhausts the immune system and leads to the appearance of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's Lyme, lupus, disease Crohn, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, etc. [7]

radiaitonsources

What is the reason for the great increase of electrohypersensitivity cases the past few years

The increase of electrohypersensitivity incidents is due to the large increase in the quantity and the variety of radiation signals to which the public is exposed in recent years.

  • Exposure to low-frequency radiation has increased significantly due to greater use of electricity, while simple sinusoidal signal of 50-60Hz power grid has been deformed because of high frequency harmonics.
  • The phenomenon of 'contamination' of the electrical grid with harmonics, is called "Dirty Electricity", due to the widespread use of electronic non-linear load devices (fluorescent lamps, AC adapters, electronic dimmer switches, inverter air conditioners, plasma TVs, photovoltaic systems, etc.) and has already been linked to electrohypersensitivity [8]
  • Also, levels of high frequency radiation have multiplied because of the rapid development of telecommunications (mobile telephony and Internet).
  • According to Professor Paul Doyon of the University Kyushu [9], wireless radiation can cause numerous biological effects that are found in people with chronic fatigue syndrome: increased oxidative damage and decrease of catalase, glutathione, CoQ10, SOD etc., cellular calcium outflow, mitochondrial dysfunction, reduction of Natural Killer (NK) cells, reduced norepinephrine levels, reduction of 5-HT (serotonin precursor) etc.

The size of the problem and its impact on the lives of those affected

Electrohypersensitivity today is recognized as a disability in Sweden, where it affects 3% of the population (approximately 250,000 people). Great Britain and Canada are also considering to recognize this novel disability.

Researchers Hallberg and Oberfeld studying the growth rates of electrohypersensitivity cases, predicted that by 2017, 50% of the population will display such symptoms [10].

“Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is the emerging health problem of the 21st century. It is imperative health practitioners, governments, schools and parents learn more about it. The human health stakes are significant” Dr. William Rea, former president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine [11]

wireless free zones (2)The European Parliament "calls on Member States to follow the example of Sweden and to recognize persons that suffer from electrohypersensitivity as being disabled so as to grant them adequate protection as well as equal opportunities." [12].

The effect on the lives of people affected is often dramatic as it is difficult to work and move in public places because of excessive presence of artificial radiation.

For many it is necessary to live in wireless free zones, like those created in hospitals in Sweden [13] or the Drôme, France (see photo) which has been declared a haven for people sensitive to radiation [14].

We encourage governments to (…) designate wireless-free zones in cities, in public buildings (schools, hospitals, residential areas) and, on public transit, to permit access by persons who are hypersensitive to EMF. Benevento Resolution (2006), International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (IECEMS) [15]

Johansson, Neurology Section, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm [11]

More about wireless free zones..

What should doctors and patients know

Chronic burden from artificial electromagnetic radiation is an important biological factor that should not be overlooked in the diagnosis of diseases and chronic symptoms.

Electromagnetic pollution may be the real cause behind multitude of diseases with similar symptoms characterized by doctors as chronic fatigue syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic immune dysfunction, kidney failure, encephalopathy, environmental hypersensitivity, psychosomatic reactions, etc.

Children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with allergies or weakened immune systems are at high risk.

Also, women are more affected by the disease [16], since their brains due to hormonal differences are more vulnerable to radiation.

Insomnia "epidemic": What is the connection with the rise of electrosmog?

How does radiation from cordless phones, wi-fi modems, electricity cables, cell phone masts etc. affects your sleep? Why reducing your exposure to radiation may an alternative treatment of insomnia problems that affect a large proportion of the population?

aktinovoliesaypnia

 In recent years insomnia has taken epidemic proportions (in the US states of sleep problems reports 62% of the population [i]), although we now we sleep in comfortable mattresses and protected from the weather environment.

This phenomenon is particularly worrying since people with insomnia problems have:

  • decreased immune response [iii]
  • elevated levels of stress hormones [iv]
  • reduced learning ability [v]
  • reduced serotonin secretion [vi] (associated with depression and other psychological disorders [vii]), leptin [viii] (hormone regulating weight), melatonin (which protects the DNA) and growth hormone (which helps to maintain muscle and bone mass)
  • greater predisposition of cancer [ix], heart attacks [x] and diabetes [xi]

The connection to artificial radiation

  • Insomnia is considered likely impact of radiation exposure from the power cables (Graham, Cook [xii]) and tv broadcasting antennas (Alpeter [xiii]).
  • The pulsed radiation from mobile phones and other wireless devices delay sleep and reduce the duration of the deep REM sleep (Mann [xiv], [xv], [xvi] Huber [xvii])
  • At least 3 epidemiological studies have already linked the presence of cell phone masts with sleep problems in the neighboring population (Santini [xviii], Bortkiewicz [xix], Abdel-Rassoul [xx])
  • Sleep problems in electromagnetic polluted areas are also reported by people with electrohypersensitivity [xxi], condition that reserchers claim that very soon it will affect 50% of the population (Hallberg [xxii]).
  • Researchers at Wayne State University and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm concluded that "during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected." and that "mobile phone use is associated with specific changes in the areas of the brain responsible for activating and coordinating the stress system."[xxiii].
  • Artificial radiation is associated with a reduction in the levels of melatonin [xxiv], the hormone we produce during sleep and regulates our 24-hour biorhythms (circadian rhythms), while protecting us against premature aging and cancer [xxv].

Is electromagnetic interference the cause for insomnia?

The human brain evolved in the presence of natural electromagnetic fields which have shaped electromagnetic activity. Alpha waves (7-12 Hz) produced in our brains during relaxing conditions have similarity with natural Schumann waves produced on the earth [xxvi].

The brain is now unable to identify this beneficial natural low frequency radiation, being exposed to much stronger artificial electromagnetic signals at frequencies ranging from 50 Hz (mains) to billions Hz (eg cell towers), which seems to cause the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and contribute to the complete failure of relaxation [xxvii].

Hospitals and laboratories are trying to reduce electromagnetic interference (Electromagnetic Interference - EMI) their premises, so as to protect their sensitive electronic equipment. Taking measures to reduce exposure to artificial radiation is probably necessary also for the equally delicate human body, especially during the critical hours of sleep.

How to safeguard your sleep and your health

  • To reduce your exposure low frequency electromagnetic radiation, remove all electrical appliances near your bed.
  • Keep in mind that if an electrical device is plugged in (such as the bedside lamps) it will produce an electric field even when not working, so we suggest that during the hours of sleep you unplug them from the wall outlet (especially if they have bipolar cable).
  • To reduce your exposure to wireless radiation, remove from your bedroom or disable all wireless devices (eg cordless phones and modems).
  • View more ways of protection from artificial radiation here.

Shielded bed canopies = The smart solution for better sleep quality

Bed canopies made from fabrics that reflect electromagnetic radiation:

  • Give you the opportunity to make a necessary daily break from continuous exposure to electrosmog
  • Ensure that you avoid exceeding the recommended safe limits to radiation during sleep and guarantee your protection from current and future wireless applications
  • Are recommended especially for the most vulnerable population groups (pregnant women, children and patients) and those who want to proactively avoid any electromagnetic burden
  • It is very useful solution if you live near cell phone masts, broadcasting antennas, radars etc. (especially in case your bedroom has windows or balcony doors with direct visual contact)
  • Are usually recommended in densely populated areas where there is an accumulation of antennas, especially in apartments buildings because of the presence of a multitude of wireless phones and wireless Internet networks (you can find how many wi-fi modems affects you, with a simple search of wireless networks with your mobile phone, tablet or laptop).
  • They are a lifetime investment, made by durable materials and you can transfer them if you move or want to use them in another home in your holidays etc.

Is depression related to elevated electromagnetic fields exposure?

What you should know about the invisible factor which contributes to the worsening of depressive symptoms. Why should you reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation from cordless phones, wi-fi modems, electricity cables, cell phone masts etc.

katathlipsiaitia

  • Chronic exposure to low frequency radiation (from power cables, transformers etc) causes dysfunction of the pineal gland, reduces the normal production of melatonin and serotonin (hormone essential for controlling mood) and can contribute to the onset or worsening of depressive symptoms (Wilson [i]).
  • Research in the population living near power lines has documented elevated psychological and psychiatric symptoms (Beale [ii], Zyss [iii], [iv]), depression cases (Perry [v], Poole [vi] - 3-fold increase, Verkasalo [vii] - 5-fold increase), suicide incidents (Reichmanis [viii])
  • Long exposure to high frequency radiation (from antennas etc) causes decrease in levels 5-HT (5-hyroxytriyptamine) precursor of serotonin associated with increased anxiety and depression (Wang [ix]).
  • Insomnia and depression recorded in the population living near tv broadcasting antennas [x]
  • At least five epidemiological studies have shown that proximity to cell phone towers causes an increase of depression, headaches, insomnia, inability to concentrate, irritability, abnormal vision and memory, decreased libido and exhaustion (Santini [xi], Navarro [xii], Blanz [xiii] Bortkiewicz [xiv], Abdel-Rassoul [xv])
  • 22 suicide incidents in South Wales were related with the proximity of victims to cll phone masts. According to Dr. Roger Coghill, member of the Advisory Committee wireless radiation in Great Britain [xvi]:“There is a body of research that has over the years pointed to the fact that exposure to mobile radiation can lead to depression. There is evidence of higher suicide rates where people live near any electrical equipment that gives off radio or electrical waves (…) What seems to be happening is that the electrical energy is having an effect on the chemistry of the brain, depleting serotonin levels.”
  • Using a mobile phone before bedtime, delays and reduces the duration of deep sleep (REM), according to a recent study funded by mobile phone companies [xvii]. The inability to completely relax is considered to affect significantly the mood.
  • The increased use of information and communication technologies (mobile phones, computers, wireless modems, etc.) is related to an increase in symptoms of depression, insomnia and stress among young people [xviii], and the spread of "Digital Depression "in modern workplaces [xix]
  • Panic attacks have been reported in areas where there is strong illumination from fluorescent lamps [xx]

Internet and technology addiction on the rise

Learn about the addictions associated with the use of Internet, Wi-Fi, mobile phones (Nomophobia means No mobile phone phobia), smartphones, tablets, computers etc. How they can have negative effects on behavior and socialization and lead to depression, anxiety, attention deficit and other mental disorders.

Addictionmobileflyer750

Addictions to internet and mobile phone use, is global and applies to all age and social groups and is now classified as new phyciatric disorder.

Experts and researchers argue that continued and heavy use of mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops, etc. has negative effects on behavior and socialization and is associated with depression, anxiety, shrinking attention and other mental disorders.

Those addicted to technology live in a virtual reality, losing touch with real life. Their brains is now accustomed to the constant stimulation from online work and is unable to adapt to the more slow pace of life offline.

Abroad, rehabilitation clinics which accept even 12 year old children have opened their doors since 2009.

Do electromagnetic radiation therapies work?

Treatment with PEMF machines, TENS, Bemer, Papimi etc. How effective are they? How do they differ from the common sources of electromagnetic radiation around us?

bemermat

Machines that produce artificial electromagnetic fields, are now used worldwide by hospitals, physiotherapists, conventional and alternative practitioners to treat numerous diseases, from simple musculoskeletal problems to severe degenerative diseases [1].

Before the dominance of the pharmaceutical industry electromagnetic therapies had flourished. In 1884 it was estimated that in the US 10,000 physicians practiced electromagnetic therapies [2].

In recent years, treatments with electromagnetism resurfaced since their results are arguably stronger and safer than other conventional or alternative treatments and demonstrate how important the biological effect of radiation is on humans.

"All living cells and indeed whole living beings, no matter what genus or species, are dynamic coherent electrical systems utterly reliant on bioelectricity for life’s most basic metabolic processes. It turns out that most living things are fantastically sensitive to vanishingly small EMF exposures. Living cells interpret such exposures as part of our normal cellular activities (think heartbeats, brainwaves, cell division itself, etc.).” Blake Levit, author of "Electromagnetic Fields, A Consumer's Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves" [3]

There are various different electromagnetic field generator machines (PEMF = Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields, TENS = Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation etc.), some of which use similar frequencies and waveforms to sources of electromagnetic pollution.

Why is electrosmog dangerous and machines that produce electromagnetic radiation beneficial?

Dr. Martin Planck, professor at Columbia University and researcher in bioelectromagnetism explains that our cells react to artificial electromagnetic fields with the production of stress proteins, like they do with other environmental toxins [4].

Short term and periodic electromagnetic stress, even at high field intensity, submits us to a controlled state of stress, which can have an anabolic effect on the body (such as when working out).

Treatments with radiation are short, periodically applied (e.g. once a day) and usually utilize waves with continuously variable intensity and frequency.

For example a popular electromagnetic therapy aims to accelerate and increase cell proliferation in the case of bone fracture. It is applied topically, for a few minutes for a few sessions, and causes controlled cell proliferation.

In contrast, the continuous and simultaneous daily exposure to multiple sources of artificial radiation around us involves chronic stress proteins production which:

  • exhausts the immune system and leads to the appearance of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's Lyme, lupus, disease Crohn, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, etc. [5]
  • is associated with sleep problems, depression, headaches, gastric and skin problems, obesity, heart disease, asthma, infections, etc. [6]

In our opinion the above mechanism is a basic explanation of the connection of low and high frequency radiation with leukemia, cancer of the breast, skin, brain, testes and salivary gland, blood clots, diabetes, multiple sclerosis , miscarriages pregnancy, male infertility, Alzheimer, insomnia, neurotic disorders, depression etc.

EMF: an infertility cause you should be aware of

Recent research shows that increased exposure to wireless radiation laptop, tablet, smartphone etc. is a negative factor contributing to the modern increase of male and female infertility. What other sources of radiation appear to negatively influence? How can you protect your genitals?

wifiimpotence

Large increase in infertility rates

Infertility is now taking big dimensions worlwide. 32% reduction in sperm concentration in semen was recorded in France from 1989 to 2005 [1] and 29% reduction in Britain only during the last decade [2]. It is estimated that one in five young men aged 18-25 years produces a low sperm count, and only 5-15% of these are considered normal based on classification by the World Health Organisation.

The large increase in infertility during recent years coincides with the corresponding increase of the population exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones, wireless tablets and laptops, cell phone masts etc. and the connection is now confirmed by several studies in humans and animals.

There is a veritable flood of new studies reporting sperm damage in humans and animals, leading to substantial concerns for fertility, reproduction and health of the offspring (unrepaired de novo mutations in sperm). Exposure levels are similar to those resulting from wearing a cell phone on the belt, or in the pants pocket, or using a wireless laptop computer on the lap. BioInitiative Report 2012 [3]

Radiation and male infertility

  • Negative impact on the quantity and quality of sperm due to increased use of mobile phones has been shown in many studies in recent years (Wdowiak 2007 [5], La Vignera 2011 [6], Falzone 2011 [7], Erogul 2006 [8], De Iuliis 2009 [9], Agarwal 2008 [10], 2009 [11], Mailankot 2009 [12], Yan 2007 [13], Fejes 2005 [14], Aitken 2005 [15], etc.)
  • Reduced number and mobility of sperm, and increased percentage of sperm with poor morphology are usually proportional to the exposure. Eg Mobile phone use for more than four hours a day lowered the sperm count by 25% and of these only 20% were normal (Agarwal 2008 [16])
  • The conclusion of the research of De Iuliis (2009 [17]) was that: "radiation in both the power density and frequency range of mobile phones enhances mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation by human spermatozoa, decreasing the motility and vitality of these cells while stimulating DNA base adduct formation and, ultimately DNA fragmentation. These findings have clear implications for the safety of extensive mobile phone use by males of reproductive age, potentially affecting both their fertility and the health and wellbeing of their offspring."

"In the past, we applied mi-crowaves for birth control. Today we make phone calls with it. Go figure." Dr. Huai Chiang, advisor to the World Health Organization in radiation issues, Medical School of Zhejiang China [18]

  • Mice exposed to radiation from cell phone masts showed abnormalities in sperm morphology at a rate 39-46%, while the control sample showed only 2% abnormalities (Otitoloju 2010 [19]).
  • Study on 2012 (Avendaño [20]) showed a significant reduction in mobility of sperm and DNA fragmentation of sperm men after the 4-hour use of laptop connected wirelessly to the Internet.
  • Study of radar users showed significantly decreased concentration and sperm motility, and increase of spermatozoa with poor morphology depending on the degree of exposure (Ye 2007 [21]).
  • In another study, after five generations of mice exposed to wireless radiation (from broadcasting antennas) recorded a progressive reduction in the number of newborns, which resulted in irreversible infertility (Magras & Xenos 1997 [22]).
  • Study on 2010 (Li [23]) showed that men exposed to magnetic fields> 160 nT for more than six hours a day (usual exposure for those living at a distance <5 meters of power cables) were 4-fold more likely to have problematic semen.
  • BioInitiative Report 2012 further notes that "Extremely low frequency EMF effects induced due to electric(E) blankets (…) have the potential for providing excessive body heating, which may have adverse effect on sperm (Van Demark and Free 1970), leading to adverse effect on the process of embryogenesis (Edwards et al 1974,Lacy et al 1981). This high temperature could also be teratogenic in humans too (Miller et al 1978, Fraser and Skelton 1978).It is obvious that either the heat or the electromagnetic fields produced by electric or bed heating might affect the fetus."[24]

Radiation and decreased testosterone - erectile dysfunction

  • In the World Assembly for Sexual Medicine in 2012, it was noted that men with erectile dysfunction are 2.6 times more likely to have mobile phones in the front pocket of their trousers. [25]
  • In a study of 2010 (Meo [26]) rats exposed to 60 minutes a day of cell phone radiation resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone. The researchers said the findings of the investigation that: "Long-term exposure to mobile phone radiation leads to reduction in serum testosterone levels. Testosterone is a primary male gender hormone and any change in the normal levels may be devastating for reproductive and general health.".
  • Other two surveys of 2010 (Salama [27], [28]) showed that mobile phones, even in standby mode affect the function and structure of the testes, and the ejaculatory frequency.
  • Qin 2014 showed that rats exposed to wireless radiation showed reduced sperm production and mobility, disorders of circadian rhythms, and reduced testosterone levels [29].
  • Study of 2009 (Zhang [30]) showed lesions in the testes by prolonged exposure to wireless radiation.
  • Study of 2007 (Farkhad 2007 [31]) also showed changes in testes and significantly reduced testosterone levels.

Radiation and female infertility

  • As noted by Dr Andrew Goldsworthy, former lecturer London Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine: "The Agarwal study [32] showed that men using their mobiles for more than 4 hours a day had the most sperm damage. (…) anyone living or working in an environment where other people are constantly using their mobiles may be taking a similar risk. (…) Women should also have cause for concern. Whereas sperm take only 3 months to produce and are made continually in their billions, all the eggs that a woman will ever have were in her ovaries before she was born and cannot be replaced. Unlike sperm, these are definitely not expendable.”[33]
  • A 2009 study (Gul [34]) found that intrauterine exposure to wireless radiation had a toxic effect on the ovaries and concluded that microwaves of cell phones will be able to reduce the number of follicles in rats with several known and undoubtedly, countless unknown mechanisms.
  • Cell phone masts also appear to influence pregnancy rates. Research published by Augner found that people who lived less than 100 meters away from mobile phone antennas had higher levels of alpha-amylase enzyme in their saliva, which is an indication of increased stress levels. Newer research (Courtney Lynch) found that women with the highest levels of this enzyme in their saliva had 29% less chance of pregnancy compared with those with lower levels [35].

Though causal evidence of one or more mechanism(s) are not yet fully refined, it is generally accepted that oxidative stress and free radical action may be responsible for the recorded genotoxic effects of EMFs which may lead to impairments in fertility and reproduction. Free radical action and/or hydrolytic enzymes like DNAase induced by exposure to EMFs may constitute the biochemical actions leading to adverse changes in hormones essential in males and female reproduction, DNA damage, which in turn causes damage to sperm motility, viability, and sperm morphology. Such exposures are now common in men who use and who wear wireless devices on their body, or use wireless-mode laptop computers. It may also account for damage to ovarian cells and female fertility, and miscarriage in women (ELFEMF at 16 mG intermittent exposure). Bioinitiative Report 2012 [24]

How to determine how much radiation you receive each day

In recent years many scientific bodies have proposed new exposure limits to protect the public from artificial electromagnetic fields, based on new research showing that non-thermal radiation levels can lead to serious health effects.

You can measure the radiation you receive from wireless devices, mobile phone antennas, etc. with a high frequency radiation meter.

You can measure the radiation you receive from electricity cables, switchboards, electrical appliances, etc. with a low frequency radtion meter.

How to protect your genitals from artificial electromagnetic radiations

  • Dont put your cell phone in your pocket (or elsewhere near your genitals) even when speaking with hands free. This practice, is the focus of the information campaign "Save the Males", plays an important role in protecting the fertility on the basis of studies so far.
  • If you use a laptop, avoid putting it on your lap, because it exposes you to elevated electric and magnetic fields at low frequencies due to the battery cables and the electrical circuits, and high frequency electromagnetic fields due to Wi-Fi antennas. We recommended to use external wired keyboard and a laptop base, which elevates the screen at an ergonomically correct height of the head. Also prefer to operate the laptop only with the battery.
  • Turn off the wireless function of the laptop, tablet and mobile when you are not using the wireless internet. Their Wi-Fi antenna is transmitting even if you are not connected to the Internet!
  • If you do not want to disable the wifi antennas of smartphones, tablets or laptops we recommend that you use reflective / absorbing materials that various companies provide, to protect the genitals, eg Defenderpad (www.defenderpad.com ), Belly Armor ( www.bellyarmor.com )

  • Replace the wireless connection to internet with a wired using a network (Ethernet) cable to connect the computer to the modem. Alternatively you can a powerline adaptor (Broadband over power lines (BPL) or power-line Internet): put a Powerline adapter into an outlet and connect it with the modem - the other Powerline adapters you put them in sockets of remote rooms where you want to Internet and you connect with them your pc or laptop.
  • Replace your cordless phone with wired one or at least any wireless phone with zero radiation in stand by mode (eg specific models Gigaset ECO DECT supporting function ECO +).
  • In case you do not replace the cordless phone and wireless Internet connection, we advise you to switch them off at least during the night (or during sleep hours in general) and place them in areas away from high use spots.
